If you have moved to Carinthia — for a job in Klagenfurt or Villach, for the lakes, or because the family is here — the first winter tends to make the point for you: the car does not enjoy standing outside. Frost on the windscreen from October, wet snow to be swept off twice in a night in January, then pollen, resin and the occasional hailstorm in summer. A carport deals with all of it, and in Carinthia you can buy one from the people who actually make it. Our works is at Schlachthofstraße 1 in 9100 Völkermarkt, half an hour from Klagenfurt. Every frame is cut, welded and hot-dip galvanised here, and the crew that turns up in your driveway works for the same company — no subcontractors, no importer in between.

The material is S235 JRH steel, hot-dip galvanised, roofed with 85/280 trapezoidal sheeting in 0.75 mm. Every structure is designed for 250 kg/m² of snow load. That number is the reason we are comfortable selling south of the Alps, and it is worth understanding before you compare prices with a flat-pack carport from a DIY chain.

Carinthian snow arrives from the south, and it is heavy

Most of Austria gets its snow from the north-west. Carinthia often gets it from the Adriatic: a Mediterranean low turns in over the sea, pushes moist air against the Karawanken, and drops in two days what other regions collect in a season. That snow is wet and dense — a cubic metre of it weighs several times what dry powder weighs — and in the Klagenfurt basin, which acts as a cold-air lake all winter, it settles and stays. Add a rain shower on top of an existing snow pack and the load on the roof rises again. Imported kit carports are frequently rated at well under half our design load, which is fine in a mild valley and a problem here. Our snow load guide explains how the figures are calculated and why the reserve matters.

Planning permission: Bauanzeige or Baubewilligung

Carinthia has its own building code, the Kärntner Bauordnung, and it treats carports more kindly than some other provinces. As a rule of thumb, a roofed parking area of up to 25 m² per residential building, no higher than 3.5 m, does not require a building permit (Baubewilligung) but must be notified: before you start you file a written building notification (Bauanzeige) with your municipality (Gemeinde). Our single carport, at roughly 18.8 m², stays under that limit. The double (34.4 m²) and the three-space carport (50 m²) are above it and normally need a permit. Distances to the property boundary (Abstandsbestimmungen) and the local development plan (Bebauungsplan) apply on top of that, whichever route you take.

This is a summary, as at 2026 and without guarantee — the building authority (Baubehörde, in most places the Bauamt of your Gemeinde, in Klagenfurt and Villach the Magistrat) decides your case, so ask before you order. The forms and the code itself exist in German only, which is why the German terms are in brackets here: you will see exactly these words on the paperwork. The dimensioned drawings and the technical data sheet you need for the file come with every order, and our English guide to carport planning permission in Austria walks through the Carinthian procedure step by step.

What installation costs, by road distance

We do not bill per kilometre. The area around the works is divided into fixed zones by road distance, and the surcharge is charged once per order, not per carport. Völkermarkt itself (3 km), Klagenfurt (25 km), Wolfsberg (45 km) and St. Veit an der Glan (45 km) sit in zone 1, which covers 0–50 km: the journey is already included in the installation price. Villach (60 km) and Feldkirchen (60 km) are zone 2 at a flat 150 € incl. VAT, Spittal an der Drau (110 km) and Upper Carinthia are zone 3 at 300 €. The province lies entirely inside our 350 km installation radius, so every address in Carinthia can be reached — and you see the figure that applies to yours before you order: enter your postcode on the installation page or on any product page.

Prices, lead time and the day itself

The single carport measures 5.6 × 3.36 m and starts at 5,490 €, the double 5.6 × 6.15 m at 8,570 €, the three-space version 5.6 × 8.92 m at 11,540 € — all prices include 20 % Austrian VAT (USt). Installation adds 2,750 to 3,850 € depending on size, plus the zone surcharge above. We build to order, so allow approx. 4 weeks in the workshop; after that we agree a date and the crew is normally finished in a single working day.

What we need from you is the groundwork: point or strip foundations, prepared in advance to the foundation plan we supply — the foundation guide covers what that involves. Installation is optional; if you would rather have a local firm erect the carport, order it for delivery only. If your driveway calls for something other than the three standard sizes, ask for a custom carport. And you are welcome to look at the steel in Völkermarkt before deciding — profiles, connections and sheeting in the flesh, after a quick phone call.

Frequently asked questions

Carport Carinthia: questions & answers

What does carport installation cost in Carinthia?

Klagenfurt, Wolfsberg, St. Veit an der Glan and the district of Völkermarkt are in installation zone 1 (0–50 km from the works), where the journey is already part of the installation price of 2,750 to 3,850 € depending on the size of the carport. Villach and Feldkirchen are zone 2 (+150 €), Spittal an der Drau and Upper Carinthia zone 3 (+300 €). All amounts include VAT and the zone surcharge is charged once per order. The product page shows the total once you enter your postcode.

Do I need planning permission for a carport in Carinthia?

Under the Kärntner Bauordnung a roofed parking area of up to 25 m² per residential building and no more than 3.5 m high is generally free of permit but has to be notified: a written building notification (Bauanzeige) to your municipality (Gemeinde) before you start. That covers our single carport (about 18.8 m²); the double (34.4 m²) and the three-space carport (50 m²) normally need a permit (Baubewilligung). Summary as at 2026, without guarantee — the building authority of your Gemeinde decides. Procedure and documents: our guide to carport planning permission in Austria.

How long does it take from order to installation?

We manufacture to order. Production in the works in Völkermarkt takes approx. 4 weeks; after that we agree an installation date with you. The installation itself is usually done in one working day, on foundations that you prepare beforehand to our foundation plan.

Is 250 kg/m² enough for a Carinthian winter?

For the valleys and settled areas of Carinthia the design load of 250 kg/m² is calculated with reserve, including for the wet, heavy snow of an Adriatic low. The structure is hot-dip galvanised S235 JRH steel with 85/280 trapezoidal sheeting in 0.75 mm. For isolated locations far above the valley floor we calculate individually — use the custom enquiry for those.

Can I see a carport at the works before I buy?

Yes. The works is at Schlachthofstraße 1 in 9100 Völkermarkt. After a short call to arrange a time we will show you the material, the profiles, the connections and the roof sheeting in the original and answer questions about your own site. If you plan to erect the carport yourself, that can also be arranged.
